Scars: Characters with Courage

  • Details
    Your scars are beautiful.

What would a tangle of aspen trees be without the beautiful bark? What would the bark look like without the lifetime of scars?( A blank and boring white canvas!) In a recent study examining the emotions invoked by nature (and what we can learn from it), Susie drew on her upbringing in Colorado to create a visual representation of the beauty created through internal and external crisis. Hidden throughout the "scars" in the aspen bark above are dozens of words and images that represent common character-defining events in a human's life. The words (in the original full painting) include the following: memoir, work, unsuccessful, failure, broken, poke fun, mistake, can't, won't, unseen, and war. It also includes the following words that represent a few aspects of the soul's healing balm: we all cry, tomorrow will be good, wiser, stronger, beautiful. The microscopic images hidden throughout this design are a vast array of things that the artist views as reasons for some human's scars.

The beauty of nature on display in the bark of the aspen tree. The beauty of a human, as evidenced through the pain they have endured.

You are beautiful BECAUSE of your scars.

I ordered four prints and got some help reducing the shipping costs. The prints are gorgeous and I love Susie's art, really, but getting stung by Royal Mail for a customs and handling fee was a bit of a downer. Still, after what felt like a very long wait, I can now fill my walls with fantastic art.
